The Calgary Flames have made a long term commitment to defenseman Simon Nemec, signing him to a five year contract worth 36.25 million dollars. The deal comes shortly after Calgary acquired his rights from the New Jersey Devils.
AP News reported that Nemec will carry a 7.25 million dollar salary cap hit through the 2030 to 2031 NHL season. The Flames acquired him along with winger Maxim Tsyplakov in a trade that sent draft capital and prospect Etienne Morin to New Jersey.
For Calgary, the signing is about more than filling a roster spot. Young defensemen with high upside are some of the hardest assets to find in hockey. When a team believes it has one, it often moves quickly to secure cost certainty before the player’s next stage of growth.
Nemec arrives with expectation. A deal of this size signals that the Flames view him as a major part of their blue line, not a temporary experiment. The pressure will be to justify that confidence with minutes, poise and production in a demanding Western Conference.
The contract also shows how aggressively teams are moving around young talent. New Jersey chose assets and flexibility. Calgary chose upside and control. Trades like this are judged slowly. For now, the Flames have made their belief clear. They see Nemec as a player worth building with.
