NBA Teams Prepare for the 2026–27 Season as Preseason Matchups Draw Attention

NEW YORK — NBA teams are entering the final stages of preparation for the 2026–27 regular season, using preseason matchups to evaluate player combinations, test offensive systems and improve defensive communication. With opening night approaching, coaches are balancing the need to build team chemistry with the importance of keeping players healthy.

Preseason results do not count toward regular-season standings, but the games offer valuable opportunities to evaluate players in competitive situations. Training sessions can establish tactical concepts, while exhibition games reveal how well those ideas work against opposing teams.

The NBA regular season is scheduled to begin on October 20, giving franchises limited time to finalize rotations and prepare for the opening stretch of the schedule.

Coaches Evaluate New Lineups

One of the main objectives of preseason basketball is determining which players work most effectively together. New signings, returning veterans and younger players must learn how to coordinate their movements, communicate on defense and share offensive responsibilities.

A lineup that looks promising on paper may require adjustments once players begin competing against unfamiliar opponents. Coaches use preseason minutes to test combinations and determine which groups create the best balance of shooting, playmaking, rebounding and defense.

Teams may also experiment with different starting lineups. Some coaches prefer to maintain continuity with established players, while others use preseason games to evaluate alternatives before making final decisions.

These experiments can help identify weaknesses before regular-season results begin affecting playoff ambitions.

Offensive Systems and Shooting Remain Key Areas

Modern NBA offenses often depend on spacing, ball movement and the ability to create efficient scoring opportunities. Preseason games allow teams to refine pick-and-roll actions, perimeter shooting patterns and transition offense.

Players must learn when to attack the basket, when to pass and how to react when defenders change assignments. Poor spacing or slow decision-making can reduce offensive efficiency, even when individual players possess strong scoring ability.

Shooting consistency is another important factor. Teams need reliable perimeter threats to create room for drives and inside scoring opportunities.

However, preseason shooting statistics should be interpreted carefully because sample sizes are limited and player workloads vary. A few strong or weak performances do not necessarily predict how a player will perform across an entire season.

Defensive Communication Takes Priority

Defensive systems require coordination across the court. Players must recognize screens, communicate switches and protect the basket without leaving opposing shooters open.

Preseason games give coaching staffs an opportunity to assess defensive discipline against different styles of play. Teams may test switching schemes, help-defense positioning and strategies for limiting fast breaks.

Rebounding is equally important because it can determine how many additional possessions a team receives and how effectively it prevents opponents from generating second-chance points.

Coaches will use these observations to identify areas requiring additional work before the regular season begins.

Managing Player Health and Workloads

Preseason schedules require careful management of player minutes. Established stars may receive limited playing time, while younger players and reserves often have more opportunities to demonstrate their readiness.

Medical staff and coaches must consider conditioning, recovery and any previous injuries when determining workloads.

Avoiding unnecessary injuries is especially important before the start of a long regular season. A player who misses several early games may need additional time to establish rhythm and develop chemistry with teammates.

Teams also need to evaluate their bench depth so that they can manage injuries and schedule demands later in the campaign.

Looking Ahead to Opening Night

The 2026–27 season will provide new opportunities for teams to challenge for playoff places and establish their identities. Preseason performances can offer early clues about roster strengths, but regular-season competition will provide a more reliable measure of progress.

As opening night approaches, coaches will focus on simplifying rotations, reinforcing tactical principles and preparing players for the pace of competitive basketball.

For fans, preseason games offer an early look at new rosters and developing players. For teams, the priority is to enter the regular season healthy, organized and prepared to compete consistently.
